A 19 year old East German soldier, he jumped over the wall on its third day of construction (at that point a short barb wire fence) and ran into a car which sped away to freedom.
Even after the Berlin Wall fell he was hesitant to go back to the east and see his parents and old comrades/friends.
Suffering from depression, he killed himself in 1998 at the age of 56, nine years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
