After eight years of war, a ceasefire was called between Iran and Iraq, putting an end to a devastating and costly war.
Around 1.5 million people would die in the war which ended in a stalemate - neither country gained anything.  Iraq’s economy took a large hit which was made worse by the Gulf War a few years later.
