This day in history: Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones and more than 900 of his followers commit suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. The mass suicide took place hours after an investigation of the Temple by Congressman Leo Ryan, amid allegations of human rights violations on the part of Jim Jones.  Hours before the massacre, Leo Ryan was killed by followers of Jim Jones, the only American congressman in history killed in the line of duty. Most of the followers within Jonestown died by drinking purple flavor-aid laced with cyanide.  Others, some unwillingly, used syringes to ingest the poison. November 18, 1978 - 33 years ago today.
